62 Caliber Blowgun Dart Trajectory

The 62 Caliber Blowguns are far superior to the smaller 40 caliber blowgun in small game hunting.  These are not toys or novelty items; blowguns are deadly weapons, capable of launching darts and hard ammo at a velocity of up to 350 feet per second.

I wanted to do a ballistic comparison of the available darts from Cold Steel.  For the test, I used my 5 ft 62 caliber Cold Steel blowgun mounted to a platform.  The blowgun was secured to the platform and checked with a level to make sure the blowgun was perpendicular with the ground.

Testing was done with the Mini Broadhead and Broadhead darts from 20 ft to a distance of 40 ft.  The below picture shows the back stop set at 20 feet.  The very end of the wall is 45 feet.

The back stop was inadequate for the darts.  At 20 feet, the Mini Broadhead darts shot completely through the cardboard, popping off the plastic flight cones as the darts shot through the back stop.  6 Mini Broadheads made 1 hole at 20 feet.  The darts dropped 3 inches from the level of the blowgun.

The Broadheads dropped an average of 2 inches at 20 feet.  From the photo, you can see that the Broadheads did not group as well as the Mini Broadheads.  I shot six darts for the 20 ft test.  One of the darts shot completely through the cardboard.
